Want A High Tech Self Cleaning Porta-Potty In Your Backyard? You can get one on Ebay.
Everybody has been in the situation before. You're out in public and all of a sudden you have to go. You're lucky if it's just #1. But every once in a while, maybe after that Chipotle burrito last night, you have to entertain a #2. When the shit really hits the fan (no pun intended), you've ordered up the combo meal and have a #3 on your hands.
Usually, out of the nearby mall, McDonalds or a Starbucks you don't have many options. Most restuarants and stores don't just openly let you just use their bathroom. But if you got to go you got to go ... Then there are the porta-potties. These public toilets are just plain nasty. It's basically a big box of urine and feces with a door with no ventilation.
Could you think of anything worse? Well, the city of Seattle tried to do something about improving public bathrooms and guess what happened.
After spending $5 million of the city's tax dollars on high-tech, self-cleaning public toilets and then watching them quickly devolve into disgusting havens for just about every urban deviance imaginable, the city of Seattle is trying to cut their losses by vending all five of them on eBay where they can be yours for $89,000 each, discarded crack pipes not included.
In theory, the toilets' self-cleaning mechanism is capable of spraying down the whole interior with water jets and detergent every day, but the drainage systems quickly became clogged with trash, rendering them completely useless. Drug fiends and prostitutes were also fond of the 20-minute auto-locking doors, but the depravity quickly became too much for everyone, says the NYTimes:
“I’m not going to lie: I used to smoke crack in there,” said one homeless woman, Veronyka Cordner, nodding toward the toilet behind Pike Place Market. “But I won’t even go inside that thing now. It’s disgusting.”
Goes to show you that sometimes even when the government tries to do the right thing by providing a good public service, people won't abuse or take advantage of it.
So I guess it's back to the nasty box of shit porta pottys for the rest of us.
